Creativity

Thomas Berry on Creativity

The universe can be seen as a single, if multiform, energy event, just as a particle such as a photon is itself perceived in its historical reality as an energy event. (DE, chapter 4, page 24)

The cosmological narrative is the primary narrative of any people, for this is the story that gives to a people their sense of the universe. It explains how things came to be in the beginning and how they came to be the way they are. It provides the first sense of creativity in a story that is generally recounted at any significant initiation event in the community or in a person. It is a healing story, a power story, a guiding story. All human roles are continuations, further elaborations, expansions, and fulfilments of this story. So any creative deed at the human level is a continuation of the creativity of the universe. (ET, chapter 5, page 59)

There is I propose, an unbroken continuity in the creative process throughout this expanse of the universe development. Both in our physical and in our psychic constitution, we are totally involved in that single vast creative process that reaches across all the distances of space and from the beginning of time to the present…. We are beginning to see ourselves as the universe that produced the human mind and the mind that knows the universe. The universe that human intelligence knows is the only universe that could possibly produce human intelligence. This relationship is amazingly close from the very moment of the emergence of the universe. …..(ET, chapter 5, page 59 -60)

We are now discovering our human presence within the larger context in which we have existence. We are entering a period of greater human identity with the natural world and its generative powers… We see ourselves as participating in these generative processes rather than as fixed and established in a clearly defined mode of being and functioning…. This participation brings with it awesome responsibilities and also demands a clear understanding of the universe with which we are dealing. For the universe functions by violent and destructive processes, as well as by peaceful and creative dynamics. Yet the universe has so far produced an amazing order and harmony and splendour in its total effect. This we observe in the arrangement of the stars in the sky and in a more limited but more comprehensive manner in our solar system. In the earth, particularly, we find the structuring of a magnificent plane, the million fold variety of life – forms, and the emergence of human consciousness. All this is evidence that we participate in a unique fashion. (ET, chapter 5, page 62)

This sense of creativity as the primary ever-present self-manifestation of the universe, alters profoundly our own sense of ourselves and the significance of our own human activity, since we are a dominant power in this entire process. (ET, chapter 5, page 63)

As humans we need to recognize the limitations in our capacity to deal with the comprehensive issues of the earth’s functioning. So, long as we under the illusion that we know best what is good for the earth and for ourselves, then we will continue our present course , with its devastating consequences on the entire earth community.

Our best procedure might be to consider that we need not a human answer to an earth problem, but an earth answer to an earth problem.

The earth will solve its own problems, and possibly our own, if we will let the earth function in its own ways. We need only listen to what the earth is telling us . (DE, Chapter 4, page 35)

God our Mother: Sofia in the Christian Tradition

God our Mother: Sofia in the Christian tradition:

In the ancient Christian tradition, even in the time of the Old Testament, she is known as the feminine face of God. So easily we look to God only as father, with all the gifts of a father. Might be our whole life we have only prayed to God as our father, but what about God as our Mother? God has also the deepest qualities as a Mother. We find beautiful texts about this in the Old Testament. See: Ps. 131, Yes 66, 13, Hosea 11,3-4, Yes 49, 15, Yes 42.14

So how will it change our experience of God, if we pray to God as our Mother?

Sofia is the partner of God, the feminine face of God. God is mother to us, in the abundance of creation, in the care of creation, in the Earth that sustains us, day by day in our living. Sofia is the Mother of creation.

Sofia is at the side of the Creator from the beginning.

In the tradition of Israel we learn that to create is to draw a circle, to set boundaries. The Bible says that in the beginning there was Chaos, but the Spirit of God hovered over the waters. In the story of creation we learn that God created by separation of the land and the water.

You see this in the book Wisdom, 8, 22-39. Just read and meditate this passage.

“Yahweh created me, (Sofia, Wisdom), first-fruits of his fashioning, before the oldest of his works. From everlasting I was firmly set, before the earth came into being….

……I was beside the master craftsman, delighting him day after day, ever at play in his presence, at play everywhere on his earth delighting to be with the children of men”…

When you are given the name Sofia, you are gifted with the deep wisdom that is in creation.

We are given eyes to see and a heart to and a mind to understand. We are gifted with the wisdom in creation, with cosmic wisdom coming from the heart of the creator. As long as we can be so deeply touched by the beauty of creation, the goodness of God in every part of creation, we are not in Ego, but open to the deep wisdom of God as a gift.

Then it is our call to let others share in this wisdom, let others feel our deep love and compassion for all of life and your power to fight for all life.

God and Sofia work together, then in the Beginning and in our days, now creation is so threatened. Also now Sofia has to fight with God against the present and future chaos, because the present humans have lost wisdom.

Sofia has two sides in herself: the side that is directed to the dark knowing, the knowing of eternal truth. She knows the truth, not because someone told her, but because she is deeply connected with the creative power of God. And there is that side that is very much directed to everything around her. She knows the situation of creation at his moment…she can feel the deep pain of creation. She will defend life with her whole being.

Sofia, Wisdom the source of all life. She is cosmic energy. She is wind, breath. Sofia is beginning. She is the feminine force in the Cosmos, she gives birth. Sofia is mother, sister, bride, daughter.. all expressions of the feminine power.

In Sofia we see the feminine face of God, the Most High, the Father. She is the Mother of God, like Maria is the Mother of Jesus. We see the Mother of God in the beauty of creation, in the fertility of creation, in how creation is caring as a Mother for every creature. Not only for the humans. Sofia makes it possible that God can be Mother of all that is alive…

Sofia is from before the Beginning.

She will help us to know, who we you are…..from the Beginning in Gods dream…called to life and given the call to help God to be (a) mother in creation and for creation…

Sofia is God’s sharing of Himself with all creatures. She is in all things, like the air receiving the sunlight. In her all creatures have their full life… She is the love that unites everything in creation…

She remains unseen, glimpsed only by a few…

Sofia is the mercy of God in us.

She does the work of forgiving, the work of transformation from brightness to brightness.

Sofia, show yourself to us, that we may see you in the beauty of creation.

Unveil your mystery to us, in our understanding of the order in all of creation.

Help us to connect with your power to create

Be a compassionate presence in us to our broken creation.

Mandala: The Green Sofia

The Green Sofia

In the vision of Hildegard of Bingen

Hildegard of Bingen is a medieval mystic who live in the Rhineland in Germany ( 1098-1179) From her third year she had visions. Later on many of her visions were expressed in mandala’s. She was a healer, composer, writer. She was an Earth Healer and wrote many books about the use of herbs, health and ways of natural healing. She knew the depth of cosmic laws and the processes of Earth. She spoke about the responsibility of the human for creation. She was an advisor for Popes, emperors, kings.

sofia

Sofia is the Wisdom of Life, of all Life. You cannot know who Sofia is in the life of the cosmos, if you are not deeply connected with all life. Sofia is an inner experience of God. Read the beautiful texts about Wisdom: Wisdom 7:1 -8:1 8:2-9:18.  Wisdom chooses people…

See also Job 28, 23-27: Wisdom is the natural order of the whole creation. She shows us how God has meant creation to be. Wisdom is in the wind, in the flow of the water, in the rain…the way of clouds and thunder. The face of Sofia is creation, Mother Earth.

If you look at Sofia, she has a very great ear: the way to deal and live with wisdom is to listen. Sofia is the one who has learned to listen. The order of creation, the divine laws of creation you can only receive by silence and prayer. See also her very great open eyes…she sees and knows..

Look at the two white tables in her left hand: they stand for the laws of creation, the Divine laws. Her right hand is open and upright: it is the way of passing on the wisdom to others. She receives, understands and passes on. She wears a green robe: the green colour is hope. Sofia in her green robe governs the whole cosmos, community of life from deep within. The robe is long and under the robe are the red shoes. She is the one who brings hope to the whole earth.

Sofia; this figure is every person who lives in deep awareness of the wisdom in the whole cosmos.

Sofia is a very old wisdom figure: she is like a tree who bears fruit and she can create a garden out of desert and chaos. Sofia is the image of Divine Love.  Divine Wisdom is feminine. It is the feminine side of God. ( Bah. Ind: Ibu Pertiwi) She is also an Image of Jesus, not the man on the cross, but Jesus as the wisdom of God.

The OT says, that before anything was created, wisdom already was and She, Wisdom was with God when God created the cosmos and all life.

Wisdom has a relationship to all life. She is like a child, so simple and deep. Not just knowledge, but deep in contact with the mystery of life. Then one understands the great mystery and the connectedness of all things from the Beginning. Wisdom searches for the pure heart and wants to dwell there.

In the picture Sofia is in the center of a big circle: the circle is an image of God, without beginning and end. There are three fields, three parts: the red ( sphere of Christ, the wisdom of God, yellow the colour of Spirit, Holy Breath, Light and white: the sphere of God, the undivided Light. Sofia is in the center of the circle and brings all this together.

On the robe you see the precious stones. It is a symbol of what has been entrusted to us. The beauty of creation.

It is wisdom that will save our Earth. Sofia is the name of the one who together with our creator will save the Earth. Wisdom has her home in the whole cosmos.

Where is wisdom dwelling in you? Allow yourself to be a house for wisdom. Do not grab her……She comes in silence and surrender. Your heart has to be pure, ready and open to constantly to receive her. She is pure gift. Sometimes Wisdom is like an unwelcome guest, brings pain and struggle and shows what needs to be transformed. She can also be called to bear deep suffering.

Sofia makes herself know: text of Hildegard of Bingen

Sofia speaks….

I, the fiery life of divine wisdom,

I ignite the beauty of the plains,

I sparkle the waters,

I burn in the sun, and the moon, and the stars.

With wisdom I order ALL rightly….

I am the breeze, that nurtures all things green.

I encourage blossoms to flourish with ripening fruits.

I am led by the spirit to feed the purest streams.

I am the rain coming from the dew, that causes the grasses to laugh

with the joy of life….

I am yearning for the good…

Just look so deeply to all creation, till you see the radiance that is in every creature,

There you see the beauty of the face of Sofia.

Living in the spirit and energy of Sofia is to create beauty…make everything beautiful…

To know the mystery of Creation in the depth of our soul

To know the mystery of Creation in the depth of the our soul.

I am regularly reading the writings of the mediaval mystic Meister Eckhart. I am very surprised by what he is writing and I like to share it with you.

“Travelling on the spiritual path” he says, ” asks for a letting go of all the images and experiences you have of God”. First of all he teaches about the soul. The soul is what a human really is. The soul is a mystery that is as great a mystery as God.

To create heaven and Earth was easy for God, but God really worked hard  to create the human soul.  Eckhart cannot really find words to express what the soul is.  There is something in the soul that is totally hidden from reason and will. God dwells in that place, one with the human in the ground of the soul.

The soul is – the -human-being – of – the- Beginning : the being he was before he existed. The soul is the Word of God who creates as S(he) speaks.

Every human knows in the ground of his being how creation came into existence, how creation meant and knows the dream of God for creation. In that deep place in our soul we find ourselves and the original oneness of all that is.  We never will be seperated from this original oneness. Who really descends in the ground of the soul, can comprehend the mystery of creation. When we enter deeply into ourselves we will find the wisdom of Creation.

Meister Eckhart speaks long before we lost our deep connection with the wisdom of creation.  Returning to this insight is a reason of great hope for us in this time.  The answers, the ways of living through the ecological questions of our time, are deeply embedded in the ground of our soul.

As I reflect on these words, a great joy and confidence comes over me. The not – created part of the soul ( which will stay after our body is no longer) can comprehend the Wisdom of the Beginning in all the life that surrounds us. It makes it very clear that we humans are destined to and born be the care -takers of Creation.
